On September 24th, Drumshambo, Co. Leitrim plays host to the 2013 Irish National Hot Air Balloon Championships, the longest running national ballooning event in the world.
In its 43rd year “The Irish Meet” expects to attract up to 40 balloons, with competitors attending from the USA and throughout Europe. Part of the Carrick on Shannon 400 Festival, the Championships promise four days of family entertainment, with the colourful sight of hot air balloons decorating the Leitrim skyline.
Each day hopes to see two mass flights at 7am and 4pm with competitions, including the furthest flight, target landings, aerial treasure hunts and fly-ins. There will also be ground based events during the non-flying periods and on windy days.
On the evening of September 26th, the Lough Allen Hotel plays host to Night Glow, a magical family event where illuminated balloons will light up the night sky, creating a spectacular atmosphere. All money raised at this event will be donated to Pieta House, Barretstown and SADS Ireland, another great reason to head out and join the fun.
