The Grand Opening of the New Museum – Los Gatos (NUMU) will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015. In honor of the GRAND OPENING Saturday June 6, 2015, NUMU will be hosting a FREE DAY for all, with fun activities and five new exhibitions, including Giants in the Sky: The Rise and Fall of Airships which will run from June 6, 2015 to September 27, 2015.
“Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, where our culture focuses on creating the smallest, most sophisticated devices, we take this opportunity to look back at a time when bigger was better.
In the early 20th Century airships became both a promising technology and an exclusive mode of luxury travel, but this lasted just one generation. During this golden age of air discovery, Moffett Field was home to the great airship USS Macon, beginning its legacy as a birthplace for scientific, technological research and development. The story of airships explores the quest for aeronautic innovation, its infusion into popular culture, and the rise and fall of a technology that continues to capture our imagination. San Francisco artists Jenny Robinson and Stacey Carter, and painter Michael Rosenfeld, illustrate the scale and grandeur of these superstructures, and contributions from private collections of ephemera, photographs and objects will provide historical context.
Our multimedia, interactive exposition will include contemporary artwork, vintage photographs, artifacts, memorabilia and video. The education and programming components will include lectures and participatory elements. The exhibit will be on view for four months.”
On Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm the museum will present Airships Mail Printmaking Workshop with exhibiting artist Stacey Carter and artist and master printmaker Kathryn Kain.
“In conjunction with Giants in the Sky: The Rise and Fall of Airships, NUMU will host an Airships Mail Printmaking Workshop with exhibiting artist Stacy Carter and Kathryn Kain, artist and master printmaker. Inspired by the airships mail program of the 1930s, the workshop will offer opportunities to make small transfer monotypes with a printing press. A selection of vintage images in the airship exhibit will be available as photocopy transfers to be printed on 100% cotton Rives BFK paper. This process uses traditional oil based inks with vegetable oil clean-up. The inks and papers are professional quality and result in beautiful unique prints. The workshop is open to all ages, children through adults. Supplies are included in the $15.00 workshop fee. Wear a shirt or smock that can get dirty.
Space is limited. To make your reservation, please contact the NUMU administrative offices at 408-354-2646.
NUMU is located at 106 E. Main Street Los Gatos, CA 95030 – 408.354.2646.
