What: The Lighter-Than-Air Society’s 65th Annual Banquet and Silent Auction.

Where: The Greek Community Center, 129 S Union Street, Akron, Ohio.

When: Saturday, October 14, 2017.

  • Social hour 5 p.m.
  • Dinner 6 p.m.
  • Program 7 p.m.

Speakers: Joe and Paul-Helmut Kindling, sons of airship pioneer Paul H. Kindling.

This year’s auction will once again include a certificate for a flight for two (2), on a Goodyear blimp. This certificate has been donated by The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.

Props and Pistons Festival – Sept. 9 – 10, 2017

Saturday, September 9, 2017  and Sunday, September 10, 2017

This weekend The Lighter-Than-Air Society will be participating in the Props and Pistons Air Festival at the Akron-Fulton Airport, 1600 Triplett Blvd, Akron, Ohio. The Air Festival will run from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, and 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Sunday.

The Society will have a significant display of its memorabilia, emphasizing the history of airships at the Akron Airdock. The Airdock will be a backdrop to the festival. Continue reading

PenFed blimp, deflated, bursts into flames and crashes near U.S. Open at Erin Hills

Some of the biggest drama at the U.S. Open took place in the sky just east of the course Thursday morning when a blimp advertising for PenFed Credit Union deflated, burst into flames and crashed.

Airlander Returns to the Skies

We are delighted to announce a successful flight of the Airlander 10 this evening (Wednesday 10 May).  All objectives of the planned flight were accomplished and the aircraft is now safely back at its masting site. The Airlander was taken off its mooring mast at 17:20 and took off at 17:28. It flew for a total of 180 minutes before landing at 20:15 and was secured safely on the mast at 20:20.
